Which method you use will be based in part on how experienced you are with woodworking and also on how quickly you would like to finish your boat. Framed plywood boat construction is generally built upside down on a rib frame. Stitch and glue construction involves bonding large panels of plywood together and reinforcing them with fiberglass, with no frame construction. Stitch and glue methods are quicker, but many find the framed construction to be a more aesthetically rewarding process.

Because of all its excellent qualities, plywood boat construction is favored by many boat building schools and courses. However, with some good plywood boat plans in hands, you will not need to spend thousands (or even hundreds) or dollars on instructional materials, since plywood boat construction is so easy for most boat building beginners to learn.

In the professional work environment people are often asked to work as teams. To get teams to achieve higher levels of activity they must work well together. Having team participate in team building exercises will help them come together quicker and produce at high levels faster. Here are a few great team building ideas that work every time.

When you have a new team at hand you must work carefully. It may be a set of wonderfully talented individuals but they are still just that; individuals. What you need to do is help every person emerge from his or her shell and interact in a smooth manner with the other team members. This is actually easier said than done. It is human nature to be initially apprehensive when meeting new people. Hence what you need to do is make the team relax and then help them gel. A large selection of team building exercises is available to help do this effectively.

Before you can have effective team building you need to have exercises so the participants can break the ice and get to know each other better or in the least get them talking. Here’s an ice breaker exercise that works very well.

Who Am I – Make up a name tag for each participant and have it not be their regular name but the name of someone famous. When they get to the meeting do not let the participants see the name tag and have someone else put it on their back. When the participants get together have them break into small groups. Each person gets to ask questions trying to lean who they are. They can only be questions that are answered with a yes or no. They get to keep answering questions until they get a no from everyone in their group. At that point they need to leave their group and mingle over to another group to continue the questioning. Keep the exercise short 10 min or so.

Once the ice has melted with the group you can start on the real team building exercises. These are more like play than actual exercises. Actual team building exercises aim to promote greater understanding and cohesion amongst the different members of a team such that the team learns to work and think together. A few popular fun team building exercises are described below.

Mine Field – In this exercise, one person is blindfolded and is required to make his or her way through a place scattered with various objects without bumping into any of them. The guide for this person will be a team member who will verbally shout commands that will help the first member to negotiate the obstacles. To successfully complete this exercise, there needs to be an intimate understanding of each other’s point of view and channel of communication. Such an exercise easily helps improve team communication.

Zoom - This is a popular team building exercise in which each team member is given a picture and together, a cohesive storyline needs to be formed out of the content of the picture. No member is allowed to glance at anyone else’s pictures. It is through the description that each member provides that the story must be constructed. It is quite clear that a high level of mutual understanding and very clear communication is essential for this exercise to succeed. This is exactly what the zoom exercise aims to promote; better communication within a team. At the end of a certain time the team needs to present the story they have created from the picture.

Team building exercises not only teach the team how to work more effectively but also give them a chance to bond on a personal level. A effective session of team building exercises is sure to increase interaction between the members , encouraging them to befriend each other so that a great work environment is assured when the team finally gets down to work.

If you have ever looked at a barrel to see how it is assembled, you will have noticed that it is constructed of segments. These are called “staves”, and the principle is used in any application where the end product is to be rounded or connected end to end in a circular fashion.

Columns, lamp bodies, bowls and turned boxes are all examples of stave construction that this article will cover.

When staves are put together in this way, a polygon is formed, with each facet or side of the polygon being a stave. Laying out polygons is not the mystery a lot of people believe it to be. Squares and triangles are easy, but when you get into pentagons, hexagons, octagons etc., things get a little trickier, but a little geometry will rescue your project.

In any polygon except a triangle, the included angles add up to 360 degrees. Once you decide on how many sides or segments your polygon will have, simply divide 360 degrees by the number of segments. Each segment and it’s radial lines form a triangle whose included angles equal 180 degrees.

Divide 360 degrees by the number of segments desired, to find the included angle of the radial lines. Subtract this number from 180 degrees. Divide the result by two to find the miter angle to be cut on each end of a segment, or each side of a stave. This holds true for any number of segments.

Let us assume a pentagon, which, of course, has 5 sides. Divide 360 by 5, and you get 72 degrees. This is the included angle of the radial lines, and since a triangle has 180 degrees, the angles at each end of the segment are half of the difference between 180 degrees and 72 degrees. (360/5=72. 180-72=108. 108/2= 54) The angle at each end of the segment is 54 degrees, which is the miter angle at which you will cut each segment. Since a table saw won’t tilt past 45 degrees, subtract 54 degrees from 90 degrees (90-54=36). Set the blade angle at 36 degrees on a table saw, and rip the stock, or set a miter gauge or miter saw at 36 degrees for short segments. When building columns, whether turned or facetted, I like to join the staves together with splines, and I use 1/8″ plywood, or door skins, for the splines. The carbide saw blades that I use cut a kerf just the right size for the plywood, and the splines add tremendous strength to the joint through additional gluing surfaces area, and they keep the staves in perfect alignment in the gluing and clamping process. If you are a biscuit joinery devotee, by all means use biscuits. They serve the same purpose, and they have the added advantage that the groove doesn’t show at the end of the stave. In either case, make sure that they are deep enough not to interfere with turning, if you intend to turn your project on a lathe.

Segments or staves can be of contrasting woods for added interest, and can be glued up in a myriad of designs like checkerboards, book matched grain patterns, or maybe a strip between staves. If using a strip between staves, you needn’t cut a miter angle on the strip, because the strip will be parallel to the miter cuts on the stave. You do, however, have to shorten the width of the stave by the width of the strip to maintain the desired overall size.

To form a base for a bowl, it is customary to cut wedge shaped segments, which, when glued together may be turned or bandsawed to form a circle that will fit a recess cut into one end of the glue-up. These segments may be the same angle as the staves, or any angle that is esthetically pleasing to you, the designer.

Use adequate protection when using any power tool, such as push sticks, feather boards for ripping and clamps for short pieces.

The various screens should also be easy to understand, which means that they provide detailed information in the simplest language possible. In today’s world nearly every building project requires some type of building permit. Which means you will have to call or visit the local building department to obtain all the required information and forms to get a building permit. Good news is in actually getting a permit you are now at least a passive green builder. This will usually be your first introduction to the main building inspector and you can begin to glean information from them, and also to see how the office operates.

It’s here that you’ll also begin to learn that contrary to popular belief the building inspectors job is not to help the property owner ,the builder, or you. Their job is to enforce the state or local approved building standards ( Building Code) no matter how long it takes you or how much it will cost you. For many people especially do-it-yourselfers it will become clear that just pounding a few nails just won’t get it done will the building inspector. And your project won’t be done until they say so and sign the final inspection. I think you can get the point of my article is the importance of getting the inspector to sign off on your project and that no two building inspectors are the same.

Knowing that there are no college programs to train building inspectors you can be certain that every inspector has had some other job before becoming an inspector which means that most of their training came from a previous occupation. Depending what they did previously will give you clues about what they will be looking for, say they were a form guy they will scrutinize the concrete work or if they were a project manager they will be obsessed with the plans, maybe they were a salesman and they are seeking to make some sort of deal (ha ha something to ponder) . But whatever they are looking for it will matter if you want your permit finalized. This is where I think that there is a lot of psychology that goes on in the building industry today which will surely be better understood years from now. Today to there are many professional people who specialize only in getting building permits and they seem to understand this part of the process well and could well be worth the money.

Back to the inspectors , even though the building codes are very specific there are clauses that grant wide leeway to local building officials (Building Inspectors) as to their interpretation of the codes. As much as you would like to think that they could check every screw or nail they cannot. But they can always have somebody else checking it for them and you would never know. That’s why it’s important to know how the office is works and who’ checking what. Even though it is absolutely the responsibility of the builder in charge of the project to make certain that everything conforms to the building code sometimes not even someone who has been there every step of the way and watched every single nail , screw, fastener and connector applied can still miss something. And even if you are positive that you have built everything correctly and according to the codes the building inspector can still say it’s not right and has to be their way. What the building inspectors job originally was supposed be, was they were to check for what could have been missed. Nowadays the building inspectors have evolved into a corps of diversified entities that wield a huge amount of power over a small group of builders and property owners who just want to build and enjoy their castles.

postheadericon Dangers of Using Damaged Lumber – Home Construction

It’s not as common as it used to be, when large framing contractor’s would save money ordering damaged lumber or inferior building products. This might be a thing of the past in some areas, but there are still framing contractors and lumber companies who you need to be careful with, especially when the lumber they’re sending out to your job can cause an accident.

I’ve seen this happen too many times, the carpenters are working on a house and the contractor didn’t order enough lumber or ordered enough lumber, but a few of the pieces are damaged and the carpenters use them anyway, simply so that they can finish the home.

This isn’t going to ever be something that will benefit the other workers, especially if the structure of the house has been compromised. I have seen floor joist, roof rafters and structural beams that have large splits or knots in them and shouldn’t be used except for firewood, yet they are installed carelessly, simply because someone else doesn’t want to take the time to return the inferior lumber to get a new piece without any damage or flaws in it.

I have seen large knots in floor joist create safety hazards for other workers and other trades. Some of the damaged lumber that I have seen used by other carpenters, doesn’t just creates safety problems, I have seen them cause accidents. It’s simply not worth it to use damaged building materials, because you’re in a hurry or don’t have the time to replace the item properly.

If you’re dealing with a lumber company that continuously sends you out inferior lumber, I would advise you to explain your situation to them and if they will not respond properly, try to find another lumber yard to deal with.
